Investment banking between private and corporate ownership, 19th-21st Century

There is a paradox in the corporate development of the banking sector. On the one hand, banks were the first companies, alongside railways, where ownership was separated from control. Yet big business in the financial sector has never entirely freed itself from the dominance of family and more generally private interests. This paper will consider how, despite the rise of the big banks, a powerful group of family-owned private banks retained, well into the twentieth century, a dominant position in two of the worlds’ leading financial centres, Wall Street and the City of London; and will discuss how the governance of banks has affected risk-taking, entrepreneurship, and financial stability.
